Squint and you can just see
the entrance to Bethlehem! The dark square in the center foreground is the open doorway into the church built by the Crusaders around 1200 in Bethlehem. Some would argue whether or not it is built over the place where Joseph and Mary took refuge over 2,000 years ago. More recently it was the scene of other refugees (was it only a year ago that the Palestinian fighters toof refuge there?). Our consideration here and now is another interesting point-if there was a person standing by the door to give it scale we would see that the opening is about 4 feet high. There are traditionally two versions of why that is. One is so no one could ride their horse in. The other is that no one could walk in without bending low. If you want to meet Christ, bend low. |
